The Piedmont & Western presents: Container Loading Sequence.

Norfolk Southern's Charlotte, North Carolina Intermodal Terminal. Jan. 1995

Yard tractor pulls container on chassis into position while crewmen place IBC's on corner castings of bottom container.

Spreader is positioned over container. Note the IBC's on bottom container.

Container is "Top-Lifted" by means of inserting steel plugs at the corners of the spreader frame into castings on top of the"stacking posts" and rotating them 90 degrees. Tractor then pulls the chassis away.

Container is lowered onto lower-deck container. Stacking posts on 48ft. container are inset to permit stacking compatibility with 40ft. boxes

Loading operation complete, the spreader is raised.

Norfolk Southern's crane shown here is unusual in that it rides on steel flanged wheels instead of rubber tires.
