Southern Railway Equipment, Asheville, NC

by Ken Humphreys

Just north of Asheville, North Carolina on NC Route 251 there is a long railroad siding which actively serves industries at both end of the siding. However the center section of the siding is inactive and is totally overgrown with brush and small trees. When the photos below were taken this section held a number of pieces of old Southern Railway rolling stock which appeared to be abandoned and totally forgotten. In actuality the cars are owned by the Craggy Mountain Line which is developing a tourist line and a railroad museum. The cars have been moved to another location for restoration.
